A Little Truth About Retouching (From Behind My Screen)

I love retouching. I really do.

I love it because it helps create an image that feels truly special. I always say that everyone is a star in their own right, and my job is just to help you shine. From color correction to adding a little sparkle to the eyes, or making you look like you just had the best night of sleep of your life—these are just a few things I do to make the image that you will post in the end.

That means I am a photographer through and through, but I am also a part-time Digital Stylist too. ✂️

The 45-Megapixel Truth Teller What do I mean when I say this? Well, meet my partner in crime: The Nikon Z8.

This is a high-performance full-frame mirrorless camera with a 45.7MP sensor. It features a powerful EXPEED 7 processor and captures video in 8K. Basically? That is my baby!

And here is the thing: It is incredible, but it never misses a thing. When I retouch your image, I view it up close, and I see texture and details that we rarely notice in real life.

The "Digital Shave" Reality I am always happy to clean up a temporary blemish or distraction—that is part of what I do. I like to keep an image real so people still know it’s you when they meet you. (Smile!)

But I also believe you deserve an image that is free from distracting dark circles, stray hairs, eye redness, or chapped texture.

I believe every face has a story to tell and that every face is beautiful. Does that mean we all look like Heidi Klum or Naomi Campbell? Or for the men out there, Tyson Beckford or David Gandy? No, but any image you see of them in a magazine is always retouched to make their features shine. So why shouldn't yours be?

Retouching vs. Filters (Let's be Real) I sometimes hear the opinion that "everything should be all natural." But I believe a retouched image is still natural—just with a "wow" effect.

A social media filter is not the same as professional retouching. A filter often makes us look plastic and tries to hide our true beauty. My goal is the opposite: to make you look polished, rested, and confident—never plastic.

Help Me Help You (The 2-Second Rule) So, let's talk about what you can do before a headshot session to ensure the image is spectacular.

  • The Zoom Check: Do a quick mirror check before you leave the house. It only takes a couple of seconds.

  • The Tidy Up: If you can see something easily in the mirror, my amazing baby (the camera!) will definitely see it too.

You handle the two-second trim or tidy-up, and I’ll handle the lighting, expression, and details that make your image feel professional, natural, and timeless.

When you handle the grooming before our session, it’s even better. It allows the retouching to simply underline your great features rather than fixing distractions.

See you in the studio!
