Are you ever wondering what the trend in photography is for 2026 when it comes to headshots and personal branding?
The authentic portrait is definitely IN! The visuals you should put out there need to be truly YOU, real, and emotional, not the perfect posing.
The Goal is Connection, Not Perfection
What does this mean when you have photos taken in a studio? The most important thing in a professional session is creating a natural look, because that is where true connection begins. I always believe that retouching is important too, but it needs to be done so you don’t look plastic. It is essential to make sure that your natural skin texture is still there and natural looking. Your makeup and hair shouldn’t be overly styled since this is not how you look in your daily life.
You are not producing a glamour shot, that is so out! Show people that beautiful natural you. Move organically in the studio, so the camera captures your posture, walking, and movement so it looks true to you.
Your Images Need to be Versatile
What about showing the relaxed, the polished, the dramatic side of you? People want to see who is behind the businessperson so they get to know and trust you even before you meet them in person.
Remember, you are using these images for your marketing material, social media, website, etc. It is important that you don’t just produce one image for all these platforms. Would H-E-B use the same commercial all the time? Would Liberty Mutual just play one "Liberty Bibberty" ad forever? They always come up with something new. How boring would that be if they stuck with the same commercial?
And it is not just video—think about still photos. You would never see a major company use the exact same magazine ad or website photo for five years straight. Would American Express use the exact same photo of a business owner forever? Would Dove leave the same picture on a billboard for five years? They know they need to keep their visuals fresh to keep your attention.
Yet, it always surprises me when a professional thinks that it is ok to use one image over and over for 5 years. Show the versatile side of yourself—are you always looking the same?
So What Does This Actually Mean?
Schedule a studio session, an outdoor session, an office session, or that side that shows your hobby. Get with your photographer to talk about how you can make it happen that your true self is shining through. That is what a photographer is for; to guide you, help you with the vision you have, and make you truly shine.
