The best compliment I can get after a headshot session is this: “That looks like me and I really love it!”
I often see these images people show of themselves that have intense filters on them that doesn’t even look like them anymore. I believe that a great headshot isn’t about airbrushing someone into perfection. A headshot should show who you are even if that means showing wrinkles.
Or what about the so-called “headshots” where I have to search for the face because it’s really just a body image? A strong headshot brings your eyes and your smile forward. That’s what lets someone feel like they’re really meeting you. Because when people can see your face clearly, they can connect with you.
You don’t want someone looking at your picture and doing a double take when they see you in person. You already lost credibility when this happens. A headshot is about showing confidence, approachability, and authenticity—the qualities that make people want to work with you.
That is what the importance is of a headshot to me. You should feel great when you know that the real you is showing up and that people want to talk to the person they see in the image. A headshot shouldn’t be an airbrushed images like in a magazine that doesn’t look like you.
You should update that social media image with pride because it is YOU! That’s the confidence factor. And it’s why I love photographing headshots so much.
A polished portrait isn’t just a picture. It’s a tool for connection, a way to say: “This is me, and I’m ready.”
So if it’s been a while since you’ve updated your headshot, ask yourself—does your current photo reflect your confidence today? Is it authentic? Can people connect with you when they see your picture?
For me, I really love when I get that authentic smile that reaches your eyes, that tells me a story!
